About the Project

The Hilburger Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Hilburger name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Hilburger name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (Bavarian Hilburgers), by time period (18th Century Hilburgers), or by topic (Hilburger DNA, Hilburger Occupations, Hilburger Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Origin of the Hilburger Surname

Hilburger is a Germanic surname that is found mainly in the Regensburg area of Bavaria, as well as the Czech Republic and Austria.

Possible origins include:

  1. Old High German 'hiltja' (battle) + 'burg' (castle, city, stronghold) or 'berg' (mountain, hill)[1], perhaps one engaged in battle from a fortified location or a hilly area
  2. Geographic or habitational, one from a place such as Hiller, Oberbayern, which is east of Münich and south of Regensburg

Please leave a comment below if you have a source, oral history or a theory related to the origin of the Hilburger surname.
